Theater for Children: A Bridge Between Imagination and Neurological Development

During a workshop, a child picks up a scarf and decides that it is a river.

They know perfectly well that they are holding a piece of fabric. At the same time, however, they act as if water were really flowing in front of them: they look for a way to cross it, assess the danger, call another child over, and build a story.

In just a few moments, they bring imagination, body, language, memory, space, and emotion into relation with one another.

This is one of the most powerful aspects of theater for children.

Children do not sharply separate thought from action, the body from imagination, or emotion from knowledge. They learn by bringing all these elements together.

The brain also works through interconnected networks. But this does not mean that we should assign a specific brain area and neurological benefit to every exercise.

Theater does not become more valuable because we say that it activates the amygdala, the prefrontal cortex, or mirror neurons. It becomes valuable when we know how to observe what the child is actually doing, understand the educational meaning of the experience, and build a process suited to their age.

Imagination Is Not Decoration

A child’s imagination is not a fanciful addition to a way of thinking that is still incomplete. It is one of the ways children interpret reality, give it meaning, and explore different possibilities.

Certain patterns frequently recur in play and stories:

  • objects acquire life and intentions;

  • the world is organized through contrasts such as light and darkness, safety and danger, small and large;

  • a character sets out, encounters obstacles, and returns transformed;

  • the home protects, the forest conceals, and a door separates the familiar from the unknown;

  • gestures, words, and situations are repeated until they become rituals.

Thinkers such as Jung, Lévi-Strauss, and Campbell developed different interpretations of these images and of the way they recur across cultures and narratives.

These are interpretive tools, not biological laws or instructions to be applied to every child.

Not all children imagine in the same way. Not all of them give the same meaning to a forest, a monster, or a journey. Images acquire meaning within the personal, cultural, and relational history of the person who creates them.

The workshop leader’s task is not to force predetermined archetypes into the work, but to recognize the images produced by the children and allow them to develop.

Children see magic because they look for it.

Theater gives that search a body, a space, and a relationship.

What Neuroscience Can Really Tell Us

During childhood, the nervous system is still developing. Experience, repetition, and learning contribute to the construction and reorganization of neural networks.

This general principle, however, does not allow us to claim that a specific theater game directly strengthens a particular area of the brain.

Emotions are not confined to the amygdala. Planning does not reside exclusively in the prefrontal cortex. Memory cannot simply be equated with the hippocampus. Every complex activity involves distributed systems working together.

References to mirror neurons are also used too casually. Portraying a character requires observing their actions, desires, and relationships, but we cannot conclude that this activity automatically activates mirror neurons and produces empathy.

Some studies have found improvements in particular abilities following theater programs or acting activities. Others have produced less conclusive results. Much depends on the participants’ age, the duration of the program, the method used, the quality of facilitation, and what is actually being measured.

Calling something theater does not guarantee that it will produce the same effects.

A workshop in which children passively follow an adult’s instructions is very different from one in which they invent, choose, act, observe the consequences, and revise their own proposals.

Pedagogy comes before the label.

What Theater Actually Sets in Motion

We do not need to imagine that every exercise lights up a specific area of the brain. We can directly observe the complexity of the actions it requires.

Symbolic Transformation

When a scarf becomes a river, the child simultaneously maintains two meanings: they see the real object and act according to its imaginary function.

They must also make that transformation understandable to others. It is not enough to state that the scarf is a river: the body, the gaze, and the action must make it exist theatrically.

Symbolic thought becomes concrete.

Building a Narrative

A story requires relationships between events.

Someone wants something, encounters an obstacle, makes a choice, and produces a consequence. The child must remember what has already happened, maintain coherence, and imagine what might happen next.

This is not generic “brain training.” The child is learning to organize actions and meanings over time.

Listening and Responding

During an improvisation, following your own idea is not enough. You must observe the others, understand what they are proposing, and allow their actions to change yours.

If another child turns the forest into a dangerous place, I cannot continue walking through it as if nothing had happened.

The child experiences in concrete terms that a relationship requires attention, adaptation, and response.

Exploring Emotions in the “As If”

Theater allows children to encounter fear, anger, joy, or loss within an imaginary situation.

The child knows that the monster is not real, but the tension produced by the game can be. They can approach it, move away, ask for help, confront it, or transform it.

This does not automatically guarantee better emotional regulation. It does, however, offer an experience in which emotion can be recognized, expressed, and reshaped through action.

Using the Body in Space

Moving onstage means controlling direction, speed, distance, balance, and rhythm, while remaining aware of how the body relates to everyone else.

Children discover that a gesture communicates not only through what they intend to express, but through the concrete form it takes.

Body and thought do not work separately. The idea must become action.

Where They Meet

Imagination and development meet precisely in this transformation of an idea into an experience.

Let us return to the scarf.

To turn it into a river, the child must imagine. To cross it, they must move. To involve another child, they must communicate. To continue the story, they must remember what has happened. To respond to an obstacle, they must change their plan.

They are not completing five separate exercises. They are trying to cross a river that does not exist.

The presence of a theatrical objective holds all these abilities together and gives them meaning.

This is the limitation of many neuroscientific explanations applied to education: they divide into separate parts what the child experiences as a unified whole.

Theater, by contrast, puts all those parts to work at the same time.

The Responsibilities of the Workshop Leader

Knowing something about child development is useful. But it does not turn the workshop leader into a neurologist, nor does it justify dressing every exercise in scientific language.

It helps us make more informed educational choices.

The workshop leader must:

  • offer activities suited to the age and abilities of the group;

  • welcome symbolic thinking without dismissing it as naive;

  • give children time to explore and repeat;

  • establish rules that are understandable and serve the game;

  • observe how each child engages with the activity without forcing them to participate in ways that make them uncomfortable;

  • recognize when a proposal opens up possibilities and when it merely creates confusion;

  • adapt the process in response to what actually happens.

The workshop leader must not diagnose neurological difficulties or promise therapeutic results that fall outside their role.

They can observe that a child participates for longer, uses new words, builds a more complex sequence, listens more closely to others, or uses their body with greater precision.

These are concrete changes. We do not need to translate them arbitrarily into supposed changes in the brain in order to recognize their value.

A Bridge, Not a Shortcut

Neuroscience can remind us that thought, emotion, the body, and relationships are not separate compartments. But it cannot automatically tell us which exercise to propose, how to guide a group, or what an individual child is learning.

That is why neuroscience must not replace theater education.

Theater for children is a bridge between imagination and development because it transforms inner images into concrete experiences: actions, words, movements, decisions, and relationships.

It does not “sculpt the brain” through some mysterious formula. It offers rich and repeated experiences through which children learn.

All learning also involves the brain. But the quality of that learning depends on the quality of the experience, the relationships with others, and the competence of the person leading the work.

Theater does not need to disguise itself as neuroscience to prove its value.

It only needs to do well what only theater can do: make imagination visible and transform it into shared action.
